The new installed capacity of wind power and photovoltaic power generation in China exceeded 120 million kilowatts!

The following excerpt is from the regular press conference held by the National Energy Administration in Beijing on February 13, 2023.

2022 is the year of the victory of the Party's 20th Congress, and the Party's 20th Congress report proposed that it actively and steadily promote carbon to peak carbon neutrality, which has pointed out the way forward for China's energy development and provided a fundamental guideline.

First, the new installed capacity of wind power and photovoltaic power generation in the country exceeded 120 million kilowatts, hitting a record high, and the installed capacity of renewable energy exceeded 1.2 billion kilowatts. In 2022, the new installed capacity of wind power and photovoltaic power generation in the country exceeded 120 million kilowatts, reaching 125 million kilowatts, and exceeded 100 million kilowatts for three consecutive years, hitting a new record high. The annual renewable energy installed capacity of 152 million kilowatts, accounting for 76.2% of the country's new power generation capacity, has become the main body of China's new power installed capacity.

Second, China's renewable energy continues to maintain the world's leading position. The focus of the global new energy industry has further shifted to China, and key components such as photovoltaic modules, wind turbines and gearboxes produced in China account for 70% of the global market share. China has become an active participant and important contributor to the global response to climate change.

Third, with lithium-ion batteries as the mainstay, the diversified development trend of new energy storage technologies is obvious. By the end of 2022, among the new energy storage installations in the country, lithium-ion battery energy storage accounted for 94.5%, compressed air energy storage 2.0%, liquid flow battery energy storage 1.6%, lead-acid (carbon) battery energy storage 1.7%, and other technology routes 0.2%. From the perspective of the proportion of newly installed technologies in 2022, lithium-ion battery energy storage technology accounted for 94.2%, still in an absolute dominant position, and the proportion of new compressed air energy storage and liquid flow battery energy storage technology accounted for 3.4% and 2.3% respectively, accounting for significantly faster growth. In addition, a variety of energy storage technologies such as flywheels, gravity, and sodium ions have also entered the engineering demonstration stage.
